Attacking midfield 3 session that starts off with the development of how to build without pressure progressing to opposition as well as link up to the striker and support play. As the session develops more transition becomes very important as does finishing.
3v0
The greens receive the ball from end player A and link it through the midfield 3 making at least 1 pass before end player B.
End player B then passes to the blues who do the same and work the ball back.
This is a great opportunity to teach rotation of positions and developing the first time ball round the corner.
The team without the ball move to press but stay passive the whole time. This forces the players to work hard creating space while allowing for composure while learning
Coaching Points
- Rotate the deep player when building if the 1st pass isn't on
- Movement & angles to receive
- Always looking for the ball to striker and how that affects body position.
- Weight timing and accuracy of pass
3v2 with recovering defender
The green midfield 3 receive a pass from end player A and build through midfield playing a minimum of 1 pass before passing into the striker (end player B) 1 green player must break the line of the box to support the striker and finish into the goal.
As soon as Striker B sets the supporting midfielder, B gets a new ball and plays in the blue team creating a 3v2 with the green midfielder recovering back after the shot.
The blues then attack using end player A as a striker.
Progression
- Add in 1 defender behind end player A and B creating a 2v1 in the final 2rd
- Use GKs instead of mannequins

3v3 with strikers, defenders & goalkeepers
Ball starts with GK each time the ball leaves the fiekd of play. The aim is to play through midfield and into the striker 2 players can break out the box to support creating a 3v1 (2 inc GK)
Progression 1 - Allowing 1 recovering defender then 2.
Allow the GK to play as quickly as possible allowig for counte attack which will also encoursge transition both ways. Finally you can use this to emphasise the importance of 1 player in the 3 holding to give both a deep option and defensivecover,
Progression 2 - allow the srtiker to drop into the box to create an oerload when needed and also allow for a midfield runner to go in behind
