Juggling Warm-Up

Organization:

30x40 yard grid, each Player with a ball.

Instructions:

Players work in pairs. Set number of touches allowed. If player misplays the ball, a point is given to the other player. Play for a fixed time, winners move up to play a new player.

Coaching Points:

- Players try to improve their touches (suppleness, control and foot-eye coordination) by juggling with different surfaces of their feet & body.

Organization:

3 10x15 yard channels

Instructions:

- Play starts when attacking player in the middle checks away, then to the ball, to receive the ball played by end player.

- Attacking player must receive and turn to link play with end player on opposite side.

- Play for 30 seconds then switch. After 1 minute, players on the end will switch as a group with players in the middle.

- Each successful connection with end player on opposite end is worth 1 point.

Coaching Points:

- Check away first to create space.

- Check at an angle and at speed to create separation.

- Locate ball while traveling.

- Angle of approach.

- Check shoulder to see which side defender is showing.

- Choose correct surface of foot to execute turn.

- Head up to locate end player and determine next action.

Progressions:

- No pressure to begin; defender is there to just shadow movements.

- Semi-opposed pressure; defender engages in a little more contact.

- Fully-opposed.

- Add combinations (give-go, double pass, etc.)

Organization:

Same set-up as prior screen; now going to goal.

Instructions:

- Players play for one turn, ball scored, stolen or out of play.

- Rotation: End-Passer becomes the Central Defender, Central Defender becomes the Attacker, Attacker retrieves ball and goes to become End-Passer.

Coaching Points:

- Check away first to create space.

- Check at an angle and at speed to create separation.

- Locate ball while traveling.

- Angle of approach.

- Check shoulder to see which side defender is showing.

- Choose correct surface of foot to execute turn.

- Head up to locate goal and determine next action.

40 x 30 area

Two teams: 4v4 plus 2 neutral players and GKs

Instructions:

- One team is in possession; must complete "x" number of passes for a point.

- Second team is allowed to score in either goal.

- Players that are neutral are on team that is in possession.

- Play 3 minute games then switch.

Coaching Points:

- Speed of play; making correct decisions.

- Risk/reward.

- Changing point of attack.

- Be direct when needed; play negative if needed.

- Constant communication.
