Warm up and combination play

1. Without ball, players use as warm up running between cones performing various movements

2. With ball players dribble around cones (figure of 8) variouring their touches

3. Players dribble between cones then go off to Right-Left and pass to opposite player who makes a movement off the cone (Repeat)

4.Same procedure as before however this time players play a 1-2 around the end cone before proceeding

Any player that plays ball out to target players must take their place.

On receiving the ball target players must take their first touch into area.

Emphasis on pressing quickly from the front to not allow an easy pass or to turn over possession

Learning Objectives

Area 60 x40 divided into equal thirds. mid.field third split into 4 equal channels.

8 v 8 (2 gks)

Game is organised 4 v 4 in midfield third with both teams having 3 supporting players in defenive third.

Play starts with GK playing ball into any of the 3 support players who look to play into midfield.

midfield players combine with each other trying to develop any opportunity to either shoot at goal or drive into attacking third.

Midfield players can only enter oppositions defensive third!

Technical

Focus is on defending as a team

When ball is played into midfield third, defensively players should "lock on" to a player, press if nearest the ball, track runners, pass runners onto other players to avoid cross overs or giving correct information to defensive third players.

Use the split channels to encourage compactness as a team

Tactical

When play is turned over can we play quickly as a very likely overload in midfield third.

Midfield players must retreat quickly to prevent this counter attack.

Defensive players must always be giving good information to what they are seeing develop in front of them.

Physical

Demanding exercise requiring high focus and desire to regain possessio defensively as a tea

Psychological/Social

Communication, want to be hearing (press, stay with runner, tuck in, show him inside/line etc)

Split into thirds with midfield area divided into 4 channels

Technical

Free play without restrictions, putting into practice defending as a team from previous exercise.

Tactical

Press, drop, stay compact, do not get isolated, block shots and pick up second balls.

Communicate with each other.

Learning Objectives

In groups of 3/4 (20-40 yards apart)

Groups compete against each other to keep the ball up in their group

Any player clips the ball over to opposite group who have nominated touches to complete task. (1 - any number of touches, head only, feet only etc)

Everybody must have a touch!!

1 point for task completion, first to 10 then move groups around.
