Set up & organization

Split a 40x40 in half. Have two small goals at each end. Make sure the half way line is clearly marked.

Instructions

Split players into two teams of 5 with 2 target players on the goal lines. In one half one team plays with 2 and the other with 3. The other half has the same numbers but in reverse. Play starts out with one of the target players who play the ball in to the team with 2 who are defending. First pass is free then the 3 attackers must try and win the ball back as fast as possible from defending from the front (high pressing). The defending team must try play the ball into the other half where their 3 team mates can now attack. After 2 sets switch ends so they all get chance to press.

Coaching points

Can they recognise when and where to press?

Can they see triggers to press? Mistakes from the defenders, reading body cues.

Can they show patience and discipline and keep a good shape through communicating?

Can the defenders play out from the target player and keep the ball? They must look to get width early and drag the attackers apart.

Can they recognize that the target player is actually playing like a GK offering them depth?
